Would You Be Opened to Operating A Joint Account with Your Spouse?

Would You Be Opened to Operating A Joint Account with Your Spouse?

A few weeks ago, I was gisting my Dad about someone whose sole bank account is freely accessible to the spouse. The family is a single income one, so only the account owner works, yet the spouse could access the money whenever and however. This person was tired and would not stop lamenting at this choice and is actively working to change this status quo.

So, my Dad snorted in his signature way to show 'it couldn't be me' and told me he never once subscribed to the joint account trend. And that even if you would, it should be in a situation where both the couple earns an income and then agrees that a percentage of their income goes into the joint account for kids and joint projects.

“I don’t want to have to always explain myself before spending my money or gifting someone money,” He said, and he meant it, so the same courtesy goes to his wife.

I quite agree. I’m not a fan of not having any money you can call yours, outside of ‘our’ money. Being financially independent should not stop just because one got married right?

Or what do you think? Would you operate a joint account with your spouse?
